I still remember the night my clan leader typed "you again?" into our war chat. My Archer Queen was down for the third war in a row, and I had nothing to say. I wasn't lazy. I wasn't a bad attacker. I just didn't understand how to time hero upgrades — and nobody had ever explained it to me.
So I sat out. Again. And again. 😔
If you're reading this, you probably know the feeling. You start a hero upgrade because you finally saved up the Dark Elixir, and then life does what life does. Your clan calls a war. Your hero is sleeping. You either watch your clanmates carry the map or you scramble for a Book of Heroes you don't have.
Here's the hard truth I learned the slow way: there is no workaround. Unlike buildings, heroes are completely unavailable the moment an upgrade starts. Hero Potions don't help — they only work on heroes that are fully available. No item, no trick, no shortcut lets you use a hero mid-upgrade.
The only real solution is timing.
Get the timing right, and you can push through a 7–8 day hero upgrade while barely missing a single war attack. Get it wrong, and you're on the bench for days. This is the rhythm I use now, and it changed everything for me.
The Two-Day Squeeze: War Timing
Every clan war runs on a two-day cycle — one preparation day, one battle day. That rhythm is your biggest advantage.
Here's what I do:
-
On Battle Day 1, I attack in the very first minute. Both war attacks, immediately. Then I start my hero upgrade right after.
-
On Battle Day 2 of the next war, I attack in the very last minute before the war closes. That squeezes every possible hour out of the window between my two attack obligations.
Let me show you what that window looks like:
| Moment | Action |
|---|---|
| Battle Day 1 – minute 0 | Both attacks used. Hero upgrade begins. |
| Prep Day 2 – all day | Hero upgrading. No war obligation. |
| Battle Day 2 – final minute | Both attacks used. Hero still upgrading. |
| Window total | Nearly 3 full days of upgrade time without missing a war attack. |
Add Builder Potions into that window and a 7–8 day upgrade compresses dramatically. Three days is often enough to push through several levels.
The key habit: attack first at the start, attack last at the end. The hours in between are yours.

Ranked Mode: The Forgotten Gift
Outside Legend League, ranked mode is the most forgiving format for hero upgrades — and most players never take advantage of it.
You're not required to attack every single day. You have a full week of attacks available and can do them all at once — either right at the start of the week or right at the end. The days in between become a wide-open upgrade window.
If you're playing both ranked and clan wars at the same time, coordinate the two. Stack your ranked attacks on the same days as your war attacks. The more consistently you do this, the less hero upgrades ever become a problem. It becomes a rhythm rather than a scramble. 🎯
CWL and Legend League: The Hard Truth
These two formats are the hardest, and it's worth being honest about that upfront.
CWL runs back-to-back wars every single day for seven days. Legend League requires up to eight attacks daily. There's almost no natural gap to hide a hero upgrade in.
But there's still a workable approach for both: the same two-day squeeze. Attack immediately when the day opens, wait until the last possible moment to attack the next day. It's not perfect, but it keeps you in the fight.
Magic items help, too. Books of Heroes skip upgrades entirely. Hammers of Heroes do the same. The honest reality is you won't have many — maybe four or five per month across all sources. That's four or five hero levels you can skip, not a full upgrade path. Useful in a pinch, but not a complete solution on its own.
My honest recommendation: if you're in Legend League and mid-way through a long hero upgrade, consider dropping out temporarily for a few weeks to Electro 33 league. You'll lose some trophy progress but gain significantly more upgrade flexibility. You can re-enter once the hero is done.
CWL is different — don't skip it. The medals you earn buy Builder Potions and Hammers of Heroes directly. One good CWL season funds several levels worth of magic items. Stay in CWL, time your attacks carefully, and use the medals to stock up on upgrade fuel.
The Real Fuel: Dark Elixir and Strong Bases
Here's something most players don't connect: how fast you can upgrade heroes isn't just about magic items — it's about how much Dark Elixir you generate every week.
As of 2026, with Town Hall 18 in the meta, hero upgrade costs have never been higher. They cost millions of Dark Elixir at higher levels. If you're farming slowly, every upgrade drags. If you're generating consistently, you can chain upgrades back to back without long gaps.
The fastest way to increase DE income is to push higher leagues — both in ranked and CWL. Higher leagues mean bigger loot bonuses on every attack, and those bonuses scale significantly as you climb. Holding your league while heroes are down requires a base that actually defends. Strong bases mean more wins, more medals, more DE — and shorter gaps between hero levels.
Fresh bases built for the current meta across War, CWL, and Ranked — covering every TH from 11 to 18 — are exactly what the Blueprint Blue Packs are built around. New layouts every month, limited to a small group of players, delivered before each season starts.
On the attack side, a consistent triple rate in ranked and CWL is what separates players who accumulate DE fast from players who grind slowly. The best attack strategies for every TH give you the armies to earn those bonuses every session.
What If Everyone in Your Clan Does This?
That's the question that changed my perspective. If every member times their hero upgrades this way, everyone has heroes for every single war, CWL, and ranked match. Your clan always ranks at the top in every format.
